James H. "Flip" Filippone, 67

James H. "Flip" FilipponeMr. James "Flip" Filippone, 67, of 317 Hazen Ave., Ellport passed way on Friday, April 19, 2013 in the Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford at 6:45 am, following a courageous two year battle with cancer.

Mr. Filippone was born on December 21, 1945 in Ellwood City to the late Attilio "Art" Filippone and Helen Miller Filippone Ewing. He was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School where he was a member of the 1962 WPIAL champion baseball team. He learned the sport at an early age from his two uncles, Al and Harry Miller who coached American Legion, high school, and various recreational teams.
Later in his life Flip continued his passion for baseball by teaching and coaching his three children with a calm and patient demeanor. Leagues included Ellwood City Little League, Pony League, Colt League and American Legion, as well as Little Angels and Youth softball.
He was employed for 22 years in the hot mill at the Babcock & Wilcox Steel Mill in Beaver Falls. In 1991, he and his wife, Sandy, opened Sportswear Graphics which operated on Fifth St. in Ellwood City and later built its current location at 601 Lawrence Ave.
Flip also served three terms as a member of the Ellport Borough Council. He is a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish. He enjoyed working on his pond, and classic cars.

Flip is survived by his wife Sandy Bartolomeo Filippone whom he married on April 24, 1971, one daughter, Amanda (Mark) Spirnak of Center Twp., two sons, Adam Filippone of Moon Twp., and Carter Filippone of Moon Twp., two granddaughters, Madelyn & Caroline Spirnak of Center Twp., one brother, Gary (Dennise) Filippone of New Castle, a step brother, John (Cheryl) Ewing of Ellwood City, and a step sister, Janine "Chick" Ewing of Ellwood City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am in the Holy Redeemer Church with Father Camillus Njoku officiating. Interment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday by 9:20 am.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice House, 146 Neely School Rd., Wexford, Pa 15090.
